The SipChip from Undercover Colors: the only drink test with 99.3% accuracy
THE PROBLEM
Undercover Colors (UCC) came to Designbox with a mission to create positive change and reduce the likelihood and number of sexual assaults. They hired Designbox to lead design and development of a product to enable a person to test their drink for date-rape drugs.
THE SOLUTION
Designbox initially worked with UCC to determine product viability of an initial concept that would test whether a drink had been tampered with. Through customer research, product design exploration, and intense work with chemists and materials, this work led to a better direction than the initial concept – it led to the SipChip.
We then worked with UCC to pivot the business strategic direction, determine likely customer actions with the product, design and develop the SipChip, lead quality and chemical testing, work with the FDA requirements, and develop manufacturing and packaging strategy. We also worked with UCC to determine secondary market opportunities, working with the alcohol industry and bars to increase the public service aspects of alcohol drinking safety.
