Chatterbox: Karl Burkheimer of PNCA/OCAC

Karl Burkheimer will be joining us this Wednesday to talk about the MFA in Applied Craft and Design. This degree is jointly programmed by Pacific Northwest College of Art and Oregon College of Art and Design, both in Portland, Oregon. Connecting design thinking to design doing, Oregon College of Art and Craft and Pacific Northwest College of Art have collaborated to create a unique MFA Program grounded in hands-on making, entrepreneurial strategies, and social and environmental engagement.

Karl Burkheimer is the head of the wood department at Oregon College of Art & Craft. He earned an MFA from VCU and a Bachelors in Environmental Design in Architecture from NC State. Burkheimer has taught courses covering conceptualization, wood working techniques, furniture design, foundry techniques, and interior design. His work, in a diverse employment of media, has been exhibited throughout the United States and has received several awards of recognition, including the 2001 Virginia Museum Professional Fellowship. Burkheimer’s work has most recently been shown at the Museum of Contemporary Craft in Portland for the exhibition “Call + Response.”

AND, Designbox is gonna take some credit for this incredibly innovative way of infusing craft with entrepreneurialism. Why? Because the chair of the program is JP Reuer, an alumnus of Designbox as well as NC State.
